Privacy Amendment Bill update

The Privacy Amendment (Enhancing Privacy Protection) Bill 2012 has been passed by the House of Representatives.

The reforms will now be introduced in the Senate where it is currently being considered by the Senate Legal and Constitutional Affairs Legislation Committee.

UPDATE 1 October: The Senate Legal and Constitutional Committee has recommended that the Senate pass the Bill subject to 20 recommendations for change .

The Parliamentary Joint Committee on Intelligence and Security is also currently considering ways to further enhance privacy protections as part of its Inquiry into potential reforms of National Security Legislation.

The Government may make further amendments in the Senate in response to the Senate Legal and Constitutional Committee’s report, which is due to report shortly.
