The Federal Budget delivered on 25 October 2022 included an announcement that the Government will increase the base amount of the Commonwealth penalty unit from $222 to $275, from 1 January 2023. The increase will apply to offences committed after the relevant legislative amendment comes into force.
UPDATE: the Crimes Amendment (Penalty Unit) Bill 2022 was introduced into the House of Representatives on 9 November 2022.
UPDATE: the Bill was passed by both houses of Parliament on 28 November 2022.
UPDATE: the Bill received Royal Assent on 12 December 2022.
The amount will also be increased in accordance with the CPI increase on 1 July 2023 and then every 3 years.
