As part of the appointment of the ATO to combine and manage the Australian Business Register (ABR) and 31 Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) registers in one place, the Commissioner of Taxation has been appointed as Registrar under the:
- Business Names Registration Act 2011
- Commonwealth Registers Act 2020
- Corporations Act 2001
- National Consumer Credit Protection Act 2009.
Initially, ASIC will continue to perform statutory registry functions but at a later stage the Commissioner of Taxation will assume primary responsibility for those functions under law.
The ATO will also manage the director identification number (director ID) initiative.
