The Modern Slavery Amendment (Australian Anti-Slavery Commissioner) Bill 2023 has been passed by both Houses of Parliament and is awaiting Royal Assent. The Act will commence within 12 months after receipt of Royal Assent.
UPDATE: Royal Assent given on 11 June 2024.
The Bill amends the Modern Slavery Act 2018 (Cth) by establishing the Commissioner as an independent mechanism for victims and survivors, business and civil society to engage on issues and strategies to address modern slavery.
The Commissioner’s functions would allow the Commissioner to support compliance with the Act, improve the transparency of supply chains, and help fight modern slavery in Australia and abroad.
